Jenny's View
Dear Friends,
If you love cooking as much as I do, you know how it opens the door to exploring a culture on a whole different level. Anyone can taste red and green chile, but learning to cook with it gives you a personal experience of how New Mexico’s multiple traditions have evolved around shared foods like chile, posole, and calabacitas.
Luckily, we have multiple venues in Santa Fe to try your hand at Southwest cooking—not only professional culinary academies, but also half-day classes in such quick topics as tamale making, chile sauces, Native American foods, even cooking inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe!
My dear friend, Johnny Vee (chef John Vollertson), gives highly entertaining instruction at
Las Cosas Kitchen Shoppe in DeVargas Center, while the
Santa Fe School of Cooking consistently rates in the top ten Santa Fe activities on Tripadvisor.
Norma Naranjo teaches traditional Native feast foods at her home in Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, while renowned Southwest cooking instructor
Jane Butel holds classes in her home in Corrales, just this side of Albuquerque. You can sample a pop-up dinner at the
Santa Fe Culinary Academy, or enroll in the one-year professional program there or at the
Santa Fe Community College Culinary Arts Program. From restaurant tours to culinary “boot camps,” Santa Fe invites everyone to get more than just a taste of New Mexico!
