Live at La Fonda ...
Anyone can appreciate Latin rhythms while listening to Agüeybaná. This four-piece band with a big Latin sound is made up of veteran players who grew up listening to American hits. Now they’re putting
the conga beat into some of your old favorites.
A project of four members from the band Nosotros, Agüeybaná leans more toward Latin rock—contemporary but danceable. They’re also working on Latin renditions of well-known R&B, soul, and rock hits, says spokesman Christopher “Chachi” Romero, lead singer and conga player.
Named after an important
cacique (chief) in what is now Puerto Rico, Agüeybaná (pronounced away-ba-NA) started playing at La Fiesta Lounge just this year, but the band members all have long histories in New Mexico music. Drummer Dennis Jasso, guitarist Randy Sanchez, bass player Gilbert Uribe, and Romero, claim the band’s focus is getting people up on the dance floor. Some of their original takes include a bolero rendition of “Roxanne” by The Police, Latin-style Bob Marley and Bobby Brown, as well as classic salsa from the 1960s and ‘70s. “We’re trying to appeal to all age groups,” says Romero.
Catch Agüeybaná April 29 and 30 in La Fiesta Lounge. Check the entertainment
calendar for band dates in May and June.
