The Santa Fe group Horses For Heroes—New Mexico, Inc. offers free training with horses for veterans and active military with injuries or combat trauma. Their projects range from grooming horses to learning to ride, and working with cowboys who have military backgrounds themselves, as well as a special program designed specifically for women veterans.
Strong, noble, and remarkably sensitive to human emotions, horses are being used increasingly to work with troubled teens and families, and soldiers suffering from combat-related trauma. Horses For Heroes – New Mexico, Inc. offers a supportive, calm, natural environment for both men and women veterans of the Iraq and Afghan wars to recuperate and reintegrate into society.
Staffed entirely by volunteers and funded by private donations, Horses For Heroes—New Mexico, Inc. invests 100% of
your donation to put soldiers on horses. The organization continues to sustain itself through the participation of veterans who complete the Cowboy Up! program, advancing to become assistant riding instructors themselves. Another way to help is by attending the group’s annual
Cowboy Christmas Dinner & Dance, held this year at La Fonda, or to buy a ticket for a military veteran to attend.
