Dear Guests and Friends,

It’s that joyous time of the year once again, a time of holidays, horse shows and crazy carnivals. You are all invited to join us for the festive Christmas and New Years celebrations that will take place in Vejer and throughout the Andalusian region. Every season has its own special delights and reasons for visiting Vejer and winter is no exception, offering endless events throughout the holidays and beyond.

Spain is well known for the love of anything festive, and the holidays are just one more reason for elaborate celebrations. Christmas is celebrated all around the world however in Spain it is done a little differently. The essence and traditions of Andalusia are observed in accordance to Spanish history where gifts are exchanged on the Epiphany rather than Christmas Day. And the arrival of the Reyes Magos (the Three Kings) is eagerly awaited. As well, there are beautiful living nativity scenes on display throughout all the villages and cities. A unique New Years Eve tradition includes trying to eat 12 grapes when the clock strikes midnight to ensure 12 months of good luck in the year ahead. February is the month to witness the crazy extravagant carnivals; the most flamboyant one takes place in Cádiz, where the 11 day celebration is filled with spectacular costumes, parades and parties. For equine enthusiasts, Vejer is home to the world renowned Sunshine Tour, taking place in February and March. Hundreds of gorgeous horses from all over the world will be competing in both Dressage and Show Jumping competitions.

We want to wish you all a joyous holiday season and a wonderful New Year in 2012.

Warmest Wishes,

Winter Activities

The festivities in Spain do not end after the holidays, there are many diverse and fascinating events taking place throughout the year. Here are a few suggestions for exploring and enjoying Southern Spain during the upcoming winter months. (for more information click here.)

Bodegas - Jerez de la Frontera together with Puerto de Santa Maria and Sanlucar de Barrameda form a triangle which makes the basis for all the sherry wine production in the district of Cádiz. In all these villages, there are numerous Bodegas, the old and traditional, and newer modern ones as well. Each Bodega has daily scheduled tours or private tours can also be arranged.

Cádiz - A visit to Cádiz is a visit through Spanish history. It was founded by the Phoenicians over three thousand years ago and given the name "Gadir". Later it was occupied by the Carthaginians, the Romans, and the Arabs. The old city lies behind the Tierra Gate, and the long narrow streets are full of local color with lush gardens and ancient historic buildings. The Cádiz Cathedral is undoubtedly one of the city’s most important and spectacular monuments.

Real Escuela Andaluza Del Arte Ecuestre - This is a unique place for all horse lovers as well as for those appreciating the beauty of equestrian art. Here young riders study and train to become professional riders and to learn the fine art of classical dressage. Their daily work can be seen as an extraordinary show 2 - 3 days a week, or you can visit their training sessions. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art also offers a carriage museum and an equestrian art museum.

Events and Dates

December 6th - 8th
Cádiz Tapas Fair, Chipiona holds it’s own Tapas Fair, when local restaurants and bars provide thousands of their finest snacks and gastronomic delights to all those attending the three day party event.

December - Belen Viviente - living nativity scene. Between Christmas and New Year, the local people in Vejer have a day when the old town is decorated and themed in the style of Bethlehem or "Belen". The participants all dress in biblical clothes and there are various animals - sheep, goats, etc. to complete the nativity tableau. All in all a very "real Christmas" experience.

January 6th - Epiphany - According to Spanish tradition, gifts are exchanged on the Epiphany rather than Christmas Day. Children eagerly await the Reyes Magos (Three Kings) who shower the crowds with sweets and toys during Epiphany parades (or cabalgata) all over the country. Every town and city in Spain has its own cabalgata. The night of January 5th (the Eve of Epiphany) is awaited with more anticipation by Spanish children than Christmas Eve.

December 8th - January 6th - Christmas Drum Festival - Jerez de la Frontera, the most characteristic feature of Christmas in the town of Jerez is La Zambombá Drum Festival. There are Christmas gatherings all throughout the town where they sing Christmas carols, mainly in flamenco style, accompanied by instruments like the Zambombá drum or the tambourine.

December 28th - All Fools day (or Dia de Los Santos- Innocentes), takes place right in the middle of the long Christmas season. On this day, according to Spanish tradition, it’s OK to play pranks and jokes on friends and family.

December 31st - New Year’s Eve, Eating 12 Grapes on New Years Eve. For a long time, Spanish people have had this traditional custom for welcoming in the New Year. When it is midnight on New Years Eve, everyone puts a grape in their mouth each time the clock chimes. Eating the grapes is very funny because everybody starts the New Year with a mouthful of grapes, and it is believed that if you manage to eat all 12 grapes then you will have 12 months good luck.

January 31st - February 12 - 2012 Sunshine Tour Dressage Competitions - the competition kicks off with 2 full weeks of beauty, elegance and skill of world class dressage.

February 17 - 28th, Carnaval de Vejer de la Frontera

February 21st - March 25th - 2012 Sunshine Tour Show Jumping Competitions - the competition continues with 5 weeks of action and excitement of show jumping.

February 16th - 26th - Cádiz Carnival 2012. One of the most extravagant carnivals in all of Spain, Cádiz takes its carnival seriously and it is planned all year. The Cádiz carnival is a huge street party. 11 days of non-stop fun, originality and, more than anything else, mass participation. The whole city is transformed, the streets filling with people who come out to laugh and make others laugh, to sing, and to have a good time. Open-air parties, fireworks, fancy dress dances and endless additional activities all go to ensure that the fun does not stop for a moment throughout the celebrations.
